An Unexpected Airbnb

An Unexpected Airbnb

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, Chapter 1: An Unexpected Party

The iconic coziness of a hobbit-hole from Tolkien’s fantastical series Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit can be found in real life, nestled in the mountains of Broadway, VA. This Airbnb comes with charming amenities such as a stone vessel sink, a rainfall shower head, and a wood-burning fireplace.

Unsurprisingly, this rare rental is an Airbnb “Guest Favorite” with a rating of 4.99 stars and over 478 reviews. The location is searchable in Google Maps as “Hinterland Gardens” in Broadway, VA.

I had the opportunity to stay here in July of 2023 and had a wonderful experience. The owner of the Airbnb was responsive and hospitable, and the vicinity was well-maintained. Be aware—you may not have the best cell service, but wifi is provided.

Hi, I’m Annie.

I proudly trace my roots to Appalachia, from Hazard, KY, to Elkins, WV, to Floyd, VA. When I moved to Virginia’s Blue Ridge in 2020, I felt an instant connection to the culture. As a new mom, I wanted to incorporate the Appalachian ideals of family, sustainability, frugality, and nature into my lifestyle.
